phantom limb pain

With at least 80 percent of amputees having experienced phantom limb pain at some point in their lives, it is very likely that you will feel this strange sensation as well if you have undergone an amputation.  In addition to feeling the weight of the phantom limb, some amputees experience pain such as heat, tingling or itchiness and can think of no way to alleviate the symptoms.

There are treatments out there which work for some amputees and not others.  Common treatment options include medications, antidepressants, massage, electrical stimulation, and hot and cold therapy, but recently, essential oils have been gaining in popularity for success in a number of chronic pain issues including phantom limb pain.

If you wish to give essential oils a try, here is what you need to know:

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are complex mixtures of chemicals that have been distilled from plants and other natural materials.  In truth, people have been using these oils to treat themselves for thousands of years.  However, essential oils have recently become a popular way to help with everything from raising the mood in your home to helping an amputee alleviate phantom limb pain.

How to Use Essential Oils?

These oils have been used for topical treatments, inhaled or ingested to treat all kinds of ailments, both physical and mental.  The essential oils and the manner in which you use them all depends on how you feel your pain is affecting you.  For example, if it feels more physical and affects the nerves, then topical may be best.  But if your pain feels more like a state of mind, then inhalation may be more the route to go.
